The Mercerville-Hamilton Square area saw several passages of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, the most famous of which was the night march from the Second Battle of Trenton to the Battle of Princeton. There are several historic structures in this area of Hamilton Township, including the Isaac Watson House, the oldest home in Mercer County (c.1708), and the John Abbott House, built in 1730, which was used as a hiding place for colonial funds to prevent their seizure by the British during the Revolution. Originally, the area now occupied by Hamilton was known as Nottingham Township, after the English city. The New Jersey Legislature created Hamilton Township in April 1842. Both boroughs were annexed by Trenton by 1898, and remain part of the capitol city to this date.
